Interview with the General Secretary of the China National Association for Liquor and Spirits Circulation about organic wine.

Organic wine is an increasing segment in the wine production worldwide. More and more wineries are following the trend to have a lower impact on the environment. In some cases because they are convinced about the need to protect the nature for future generations, in other cases following the market demand.

Two weeks ago, the biggest international competition for organic wine “Bioweinpreis” by PAR took place. Although 2016 was a difficult year for the organic wine producers in Europe, due to climatic conditions, the number of samples entered to the “Bioweinpreis” increased. 1094 samples from 25 countries entered the competition this year. 49 entries came from China, more than double as in 2016. This amazing growth in numbers guided us to interview Mr. Shuyao Qin, General Secretary of the China National Association for Liquor and Spirits Circulation:

What is the first thing coming to your mind if you hear organic wine?”

Healthy and reliable wine.

“Which importance has organic wine right now in China?”

Organic wine is a trend in China. Consumers are looking for healthy, safe and trustable products. As people want a high quality live, everybody is looking for the organic indication on the labels to know they buy safe products. Not too long ago things were produced organically; this means it is the traditional and natural way of production.

“How do you estimate the interest of Chinese wineries to be certified organic?”

Few wineries know how to produce organic wine, but trying to work in the vineyard in an organic way by their own thinking and feeling. I am sure that in the future wineries will be interested to certify their wines organic. At the same time in my point of view, Chinese wineries should focus on local grape varieties like Beibinghong, as they are perfectly adapted to the local growing conditions. Beibinghong is frost resistant up to minus 30 degrees Celsius, which makes it unnecessary to bury the vines in winter like the ones of vitis vinifera. It makes me very satisfied that a wine of Tonghua, made by Beibinghong, got a golden award at the Bioweinpreis, as it shows the potential of the grape variety.

And in the future?”

Organic wine production should be like a whole system from planting, over producing to selling. PAR can be a big support for creating this system, as the evaluation shows where in the whole process there is potential to increase the quality.

If it comes to choose organic wine, who are the consumers?”

As I already mentioned it is a trend in China. Consumers want to have safe food. Of course, mainly these are right now people with a certain education level and social position, as the income and their live standard allows them to spend the money on organic products.

How will organic wine develop in the next 5 years in China?”

Very difficult to estimate right now. This main trend will continue, as many people know about the benefits from organically grown products. However, the growth itself is hard to tell, but it will grow. China will need time to let consumers know about organic and wineries will need time to invest and find the right balance on the market. Laws in China are very strict for an organic certification. This means wineries wanting to be certified organic will need to well prepare and work hard to reach this goal.

“Do you think organic wine tastes different?”

Until now, my focus was to know it is better for my health and the environment. Also very important for me is that the feeling is much better while drinking organic wine. Seeing that from the 49 entries of Chinese wine to the International PAR Organic Wine Award (Bioweinpreis) 46 got awards or recommendations, I will have a closer look how they taste while opening the next bottle.

Wsana Woo and Jörg Philipp from the organization board of the Bioweinpreis held the interview.
